Choose Yourself
We interpret things based on the personal lens that has been cultivated throughout our lives. Some may perceive choosing yourself as selfish or as a source of guilt because from their personal lens they do not believe they are inherently worthy. Others may perceive choosing yourself as a nonexistent option because they have always self-abandoned to people please or to put people's needs above theirs. Let’s amend your interpretation of choosing yourself. Choosing yourself can be perceived as consciously prioritizing your overall well-being above others in a non-selfish way, enforcing your boundaries, choosing to walk away when placed in situations that are not fruitful or at the first sign of red flags, and practicing a deep awareness of what does/does not work for you. Though my interpretation is lengthy, the intention is to help you recognize the importance of knowing when to choose yourself.
You deserve to give yourself the means to flourish as a whole individual and part of that means you will have to know how to choose yourself. Pragmatically, choosing yourself in relationships that are unhealthy means to walk away because your well-being is at stake or choosing yourself instead of remaining in a job that undervalues you is leaving situations that are not fruitful. When we choose ourselves, we are saying yes to staying aligned with what we believe to be true about what we deserve and what we desire. The inverse is true as well, when we do not choose ourselves we are reinforcing limited beliefs. The next time you are faced with the dilemma of whether to choose yourself or to persist within a cycle of an unfavorable circumstance, be steadfast in choosing yourself. Then keep choosing yourself. Your life is a culmination of decisions and choosing you is one of the best decisions you can follow through on.
